தென்னாப்பிரிக்காவில் SARS-CoV-2 புதிய வகை B.1.1.529 கொரோனா வைரஸ் கண்டறியப்பட்டது. உலக அளவில் கண்டறியப்பட்டும் புதிய வகை கொரோனா வைரஸ்களுக்கு உலக சுகாதார அமைப்பு கிரேக்க வார்த்தைகளின் வரிசையில் பெயரிட்டு வருகிறது. அந்த வகையில் புதிய வைரஸுக்கு `Nu’ கொரோனா வைரஸ் என்று பெயரிட வேண்டும். ஆனால், கடந்த வெள்ளிக்கிழமை நடைபெற்ற உலக சுகாதார அமைப்பின் அவசர ஆலோசனைக் கூட்டத்துக்குப் பிறகு, தென்னாப்பிரிக்கா மற்றும் போஸ்ட்வானாவில் கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும் புதிய வகை கொரோனா வைரஸ் கவலையளிக்கும் வகையில் வேகமாகப் பரவக் கூடியதாகச் சொல்லப்பட்டது.
மேலும், அடுத்த கிரேக்க வார்த்தையான `Nu’ மற்றும் அதற்கடுத்த வார்த்தையானXI’ என இரண்டு வார்த்தைகளைத் தவிர்த்துவிட்டு, அடுத்த எழுத்தான Omicron வகை வைரஸ் என உலக சுகாதார அமைப்பு பெயரிட்டிருக்கிறது. இந்த விவகாரம் சர்ச்சையாகியிருக்கிறது.

கொரோனா வைரஸின் புதிய வகையை சீன அதிபரின் பெயரில் இடம்பெற்றிருக்கும் முதல் எழுத்துகளான `XI’ வகை கொரோனா வைரஸ் என்று அழைக்கப்படுவதைத் தவிர்க்க உலக சுகாதார அமைப்பு இந்த முடிவை எடுத்திருக்கலாம் என்று ஹார்வார்டு பல்கலைக்கழகப் பேராசியர் மார்ட்டின் குல்ட்ராப் கருத்துத் தெரிவித்திருக்கிறார். மற்றொரு தரப்போ, உலக சுகாதார அமைப்புக்கு கம்யூனிஸ்ட் நாடான சீனா மீதும் அதன் அதிபர் ஜி ஷின்பிங் மீது இருக்கும் அச்சத்தின் வெளிப்பாடே இந்த பெயரிடலுக்குப் பின்னணியில் இருக்கும் உண்மை என்று விமர்சித்து வருகிறார்கள்.
உலக சுகாதார அமைப்பு என்ன சொல்கிறது?
சீன அதிபர் பெயரால் இப்படி புதிய வைரஸுக்குப் பெயர் வைக்கவில்லை என்று கூறும் உலக சுகாதார அமைப்பு, Nu’ என்ற பெயர் குழப்பும் வகையில் இருப்பதாகவும், `XI’ என்ற பெயர் வழக்கமான பெயர் என்றும் கூறியிருக்கிறது. இதனாலேயே இரண்டு எழுத்துகளையும் தவிர்த்துவிட்டு Omicron என்று பெயரிடப்பட்டிருப்பதாகக் கூறியிருக்கிறது.
