பெரியாரின் சுயமரியாதை இயக்கம், முஸ்லீம் லீக் ஆகிய அமைப்புகளின் ஏற்பாட்டில் உருவாக்கப்பட்ட தமிழர் படை’ தமிழகம் முழுவதும் 87 பொதுக்கூட்டங்களை நடத்தியது. இந்தப் படையில் இடம்பெற்றிருந்த மூவலூர் ராமமிர்தம் அம்மையார், குமாரசாமி பிள்ளை ஆகியோர் மதராஸில் இருந்த அப்போதைய பிரிட்டீஷ் அரசு அலுவலகங்களை முற்றுகையிட்டு 1939-ல் சிறைசென்றனர். இந்தி திணிப்புக்கு எதிராக 1938-ம் ஆண்டு செப்டம்பர் 11-ல் நடைபெற்ற கூட்டத்தில்,தமிழ்நாடு தமிழருக்கே’ என்ற கோஷத்தை முன்வைத்தார். இரண்டு ஆண்டுகள் தொடர்ச்சியாக நடந்த போராட்டத்தைக் கட்டுப்படுத்த முடியாமல் திணறிய ராஜாஜி, 1939-ல் பதவி விலகினார். அதன்பின்னர், ஆட்சிப்பொறுப்பை ஏற்ற பிரிட்டீஷ் அரசு இந்தி கட்டாயம் என்பதைத் திரும்பப் பெற்றது. மதராஸ் மாகாண ஆளுநராக இருந்த ஜான் எர்ஸ்கின், 1940-ம் ஆண்டு பிப்ரவரி 21-ல் இந்தி கட்டாயம் என்ற உத்தரவைத் திரும்பப் பெறுவதாக அறிவித்தார்.

இரண்டாவது இந்தி எதிர்ப்புப் போராட்டம்

இந்திய விடுதலைக்குப் பிறகு 1948-ல் தமிழகத்தில் ஆட்சிக்கு வந்த ஓமந்தூர் ராமசாமி ரெட்டியார் தலைமையிலான காங்கிரஸ் அரசின் உத்தரவு இரண்டாவது இந்தி எதிர்ப்புப் போராட்டத்துக்கு வித்திட்டது. ஒருங்கிணைந்த மதராஸ் மாகாணத்தில் தெலுங்கு, கன்னடம், மலையாளம் பேசும் பகுதிகளில் இந்தி கற்பது கட்டாயம் என்றும் தமிழ் பேசும் பகுதிகளில் இந்தி விருப்பப்பாடமாகவும் இருக்கும் என்று அப்போதைய காங்கிரஸ் அரசு உத்தரவிட்டது. இந்த உத்தரவுக்கு எதிராகக் கடும் எதிர்ப்புக் கிளம்பியது. எதிர்ப்பால், அந்த உத்தரவை ஓமந்தூரார் திரும்பப் பெற்றார்.

மூன்றாவது இந்தி எதிர்ப்புப் போராட்டம்

இந்தியைக் கட்டாயமாக்கும் முயற்சி 1952-ம் ஆண்டு முதல் 1965-ம் ஆண்டு வரை காங்கிரஸ் அரசால் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டது. இதை எதிர்த்து காங்கிரஸ் கட்சி சாராத தலைவர்கள், தமிழறிஞர்கள் போராட்டம் நடத்தி சிறை சென்றனர். 1950 ஜனவரி 26-ல் இந்திய அரசியலமைப்புச் சட்டம் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளப்பட்டது. அதில், இந்தியை நாடு முழுமைக்கும் பொதுவான அலுவல் மொழியாகப் பயன்படுத்த பரிந்துரை செய்யப்பட்டது. ஆனால், இதற்கு இந்தி பேசாத மாநிலங்கள் இடையே கடும் எதிர்ப்புக் கிளம்பவே, அப்போதைய பிரதமர் நேரு, இந்தி பேசாத மாநிலங்கள் தயாராகும் பொருட்டு அடுத்த 15 ஆண்டுகள் (1965 ஜனவரி 26 வரை) இந்தியோடு ஆங்கிலமும் அலுவல் மொழியாக இருக்கும் என்று அறிவித்தார். ஆனால், இந்த வாய்மொழி உறுதியை ஏற்க மறுத்து போராட்டங்கள் தீவிரமடைந்தன.

1963-ல் மாநிலங்களவை எம்.பியாக இருந்த அண்ணா, பிரதமர் நேருவிடம், இந்தி மட்டுமே அலுவல் மொழியாக இருக்க வேண்டும் என்ற முடிவைக் கைவிடுமாறு வலியுறுத்தினார். கட்டாய இந்தித் திணிப்பை எதிர்த்து தமிழகம் முழுவதும் மாணவர்கள் போராட்டம் வெடித்தது. ஆங்காங்கே வன்முறையும் வெடித்தது. 1965 ஜனவரி 26-ம் தேதி நெருங்கிய நிலையில், தமிழகம் முழுவதும் போராட்டங்கள் வலுத்தன. போராட்டத்தில் தி.மு.க முழுமையாக ஈடுபட்டது. போராட்டங்களை ஒடுக்க தலைவர்கள் கைது செய்யப்பட்டு சிறையில் அடைக்கப்பட்டனர். முதலில் இந்தித் திணிப்புக்கு ஆதரவாகப் பேசிவந்த ராஜாஜியே திருச்சி இந்தி எதிர்ப்பு மாநாட்டில் கலந்துகொண்டு போராட்டத்தின் நியாயத்தை மக்களுக்கு எடுத்துரைத்தார்.

1965 ஜனவரி 25-ல் `தமிழ் வாழ்க; இந்தி ஒழிக’ என்று கோஷமிட்டபடியே திருச்சி ரயில்வே சந்திப்பு முன்னர் கீழப்பழுவூர் சின்னச்சாமி தீக்குளித்து உயிர்த்தியாகம் செய்தார். அவரைத் தொடர்ந்து விராலிமலை சண்முகம், கோடம்பாக்கம் சிவலிங்கம், விருகம்பாக்கம் அரங்கநாதன், ஆசிரியர் வீரப்பன், கீரனூர் முத்து, மாயவரம் சாரங்கபாணி, சத்தியமங்கலம் முத்து, பீளமேடு தண்டபாணி உள்ளிட்ட தமிழர்கள் பலர் மொழிப்போரில் தங்கள் இன்னுயிரைத் தியாகம் செய்தனர். தொடர் போராட்டங்களால் 1965-க்குப் பிறகும் ஆங்கிலம் அலுவல் மொழியாகத் தொடரும் என்று பிரதமராக இருந்த நேருவும் இந்திரா காந்தியும் உறுதியளித்தனர். கட்டாய இந்தித் திணிப்பைக் கைவிட மத்திய அரசு முடிவெடுத்தது. மொழிப்போர் தியாகிகள் நினைவாக ஆண்டுதோறும் தமிழகத்தில் ஜனவரி 25-ம் தேதி மொழிப்போர் தியாகிகள் நினைவு தினமாக அனுசரிக்கப்படுகிறது.
