ஈரோட்டில் வசதியான குடும்பத்தில் பிறந்த பெரியார், இளம் வயதிலேயே பகுத்தறிவுக் கொள்கைகள் மீது ஆர்வம் கொண்ட அவர், சமுதாயத்தின் ஏற்றத் தாழ்வுகள் குறித்து கேள்வி எழுப்பினார். சாதி மறுப்புத் திருமணங்களையும் அவர் நடத்தி வைத்த நிலையில், இந்த விவகாரத்தால் பெரியார் மீது அவரது தந்தை வருத்தம் கொண்டார். இதனால், வீட்டை விட்டு 1902-ல் வெளியேறிய பெரியார் துறவறம் பூண்டு காசிக்குச் சென்றார். அங்கு அவர் நேரில் பார்த்த சம்பவங்கள் மனதை வெகுவாகப் பாதிக்கவே, சமூக ஏற்றத் தாழ்வுகளுக்கு எதிராகப் போராட வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணத்தைத் தூண்டின.

அந்த நேரத்தில் சுதந்திரப் போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்டிருந்த காந்தியின் கருத்துகளால் ஈர்க்கப்பட்டு காங்கிரஸில் 1919-ல் இணைந்தார். காந்தியின் கதராடை அணிய வேண்டும் என்ற கோரிக்கையை ஏற்று, கதராடை பற்றி மக்களுக்கு எடுத்துரைத்தார். ஈரோடு நகராட்சி மன்றத் தலைவராக இருந்தபோது, வெளிநாட்டுத் துணிகளை இறக்குமதி செய்து விற்கும் வணிகர்களுக்கு எதிராகப் போராடினார்.

காங்கிரஸ் மீது அதிருப்தி ஏன்?

1921-ல் காந்தி அறிவித்த ஒத்துழையாமை இயத்தில் தீவிரமாகக் கலந்துகொண்டு போராடி கைது செய்யப்பட்டு சிறையிலடைக்கப்பட்டார். விடுதலையான பின்னர், மது ஒழிப்புக்கு ஆதரவாகக் கள்ளுக்கடை போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்டார். கள்ளுக்கடை போராட்டத்தின்போது, தனது தோட்டத்தில் இருந்த 500 தென்னை மரங்களை வெட்டி சாய்த்தார். காந்தியின் கொள்கைகளைத் தீவிரமாகக் கடைபிடித்த பெரியாருக்கு, காங்கிரஸ் கட்சியில் இருந்த சாதியரீதியிலான ஏற்றத்தாழ்வுகள் அதிருப்தியை ஏற்படுத்தின. சாதிய ஏற்றத்தாழ்வுகளை சமூகத்தில் இருந்து வேரறுக்க, அதை முதலில் கட்சியில் இருந்து தொடங்க வேண்டும் என்று வலியுறுத்தினார்.

1922-ல் சென்னை மாகாண காங்கிரஸின் தலைவராகப் பொறுப்பேற்ற அவர், கட்சி நடத்திய மாநாடுகளில் வகுப்பு வாரி பிரதிநிதித்துவத்துக்கு ஆதரவாகத் தீர்மானங்களைக் கொண்டு வந்து நிறைவேற்ற முயன்றார். இந்த சமயத்தில் திருநெல்வேலி மாவட்டம் சேரன்மாதேவி நகரில் இருந்த குருகுலம் ஒன்றில் நடந்த சம்பவம் பெரியாரை ரொம்பவே பாதித்தது. சேரன்மாதேவியில் காங்கிரஸ் கட்சியின் மூத்த தலைவர்களுள் ஒருவரான வ.வே.சுப்ரமணிய அய்யர் குருகுலம் ஒன்றை நடத்தி வந்தார். அந்த குருகுலத்துக்கு காங்கிரஸ் கட்சி சார்பில் பத்தாயிரம் ரூபாய் நிதி உதவியும் வழங்கப்பட்டு வந்தது.

அந்த குருகுலத்தில் பிராமண மாணவர்களுக்குத் தனியாகவும் மற்ற சமூகத்து மாணவர்களுக்குத் தனியாகவும் உணவு பரிமாறப்பட்ட செய்தி வெளியானது. இதை எதிர்த்துக் குரல் கொடுத்த பெரியார், அந்தப் வழக்கத்தைக் கைவிட வலியுறுத்தினார். ஆனால், வ.வே.சு அதற்கு மறுப்புத் தெரிவித்தார். மேலும், காங்கிரஸ் கட்சியும் அந்த குருகுலத்துக்கு அளித்துவந்த நிதியுதவியை நிறுத்த மறுத்தது.
